Research Work
I've worked on qualitative and quantitative research projects for the past 7 years with topics ranging from generative AI, telepresence robots, smart home technologies, mobile applications, to car infotainment systems. I also have experiences translating research findings to design recommendations.
I provide a brief introduction to these projects and would always love to chat more:)
Co-Designing Visual Cues Representing Data Processes with Children
A participatory design study collaborating with children (ages 7–12) through an iterative process to create concrete, context-specific, and engaging visual cues embedded as a part of the user experience to help children understand hidden data processes. I was the lead researcher to design, execute, and analyze the data of this research project.
Unfulfilled Promises of Child Safety and Privacy: Portrayals and Use of Children in Smart Home Marketing
A content analysis study to understand how smart home vendors depict children’s roles and experiences in smart home marketing, and whether such depictions (mis)align with research evidence on family smart home interactions. I was the lead researcher to design, execute, and analyze the data of this research project.
Cross-Contextual Examination of Older Adults' Privacy Concerns, Behaviors, and Vulnerabilities
A interview study with 43 older adults (aged 65 to 89) to understand their privacy concerns and behaviors across contexts in account and device sharing, healthcare, online advertising, social networking, and cybercrime. I collaborated with the lead researcher for data analysis.
Smart Home Users' Security and Privacy Attitudes on Reddit
An qualitative content analysis study to understand how smart home users on Reddit develop security and privacy considerations, how their attitudes evolve given the changing context, and how online discourse influences them. I collaborated with the lead researcher to analyze the data of this research project.
Children's Conceptualization of Data Processing and Digital Privacy Risks
A scenario-based interview study to understand how young children conceptualize data processing (e.g., data sharing, collection, and inference), behavioral tracking, surveillance, and digital privacy risks. I was the lead researcher to design, execute, and analyze the data of this research project.
Disparities in Students' Propensity to Consent to Learning Analytics
A survey study to understand students' perspectives on their educational data being used in learning analytics and the population and participation characteristics of students who indicate a preference to allow or disallow their educational data to be used for learning analytics. I designed the survey instrument and analyzed the collected data.
Usability Issues in Data Breach Notifications
A content analysis study to understand the effectiveness of data breach notifications regarding their readability, structure, risk communication, and presentation of potential actions, as well as the potential directions for improvements. I collaborated with the lead researcher to collect and analyze data.
Tensions Among Stakeholders of a Learning Analytics Dashboard
An interview study to understand multi groups of key stakeholders' perceptions regarding the privacy, ethics, and impact of an early-warning learning analytics dashboard. I was the lead researcher to design, execute, and analyze the data of this research project.
Exploring How the Future of Smart Bathroom Use Cases May Hold
An exploratory qualitative study to understand the specific bathroom-related digital products, problems, and data to explore the varying types of use cases for the future of the smart bathroom. I was the lead researcher to design, execute, and analyze the data of this research project.
Drivers' Perceptions and Needs Toward the Infotainment System in a Connected-vehicle
A mixed-method project to understand drivers' perceptions and needs toward the infotainment system of a connected-vehicle for the purpose of improving usability. I collaborated with three team members to design, execute, and analyze the data of this research project.
